Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" were revealed.

This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

Court Filing Details Flight Fears

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the judge said information from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the potential of the former president's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, leading him to impose a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being kept in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to allow him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which involved plans to assassinate the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the support of the military leaders. His successor was inaugurated without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, Brasília.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The magistrates found that the protesters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - a decade minus two years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
