Democracy flourishes when Black Americans progress. Data confirms: birthright citizenship, constitutional due process, anti-discrimination laws across education, housing, and employment sectors and fair business funding are all byproducts institutional reforms currently called DEI. Yet, recently, DEI has served as a smokescreen by cynical politicians and activists to roll back progress and consolidate power.

Measurable Consequences of These Current Tactics

The impact of these approaches is substantial and unquestionable. Since the start of this year, studies indicate showing 306,000 African American women have become unemployed and $3.4 billion in grant programs supporting African American neighborhoods has been slashed – comprising $9.4m for sickle cell studies, $42m in programs designed to address Black maternal mortality plus $31m in reductions to address asthma prevalence and air pollution affecting Black children.

Historical Context with Broader Implications

Concerted attempts to stifle the advancement of Black communities is not new; nevertheless, history has proven that when progress for Black people is erased, everyone suffers. In the Reconstruction era, Black Americans made extraordinary strides – holding office, building businesses and creating educational institutions. Less discussed is how other oppressed communities, from white sharecroppers to Latino gauchos, similarly gained from expanded opportunities within legal and financial frameworks.

Misrepresentation represents among the most deceptive strategies. It alters truth in manners that limit our possibilities and institutionalizes prejudice as policy.

When Black people encountered decades of segregation laws and government-approved bias, additional populations saw a similar retreat regarding their entry to complete civic participation. When the civil rights movement worked to remove the remnants of segregation, its practices of peaceful protest expanded freedom and opportunity not only for African Americans, but for communities of all backgrounds. From the Native American movement to progress in gay rights to women's economic empowerment, African American equality efforts opened the aperture for expanded human rights.

Present Obstacles and Intentional Efforts

Nevertheless, whenever Black communities make progress, forces threatened by change work to push us back. While confronting the current regime, DEI serves as the defense ensuring a pluralistic democracy. Its power stems not from partisanship, but from the ideal of America itself: that every individual possess equal worth and merit opportunity to thrive.

It's essential to understand these attacks as components of a deliberate campaign. The objective is to alter our nation's story and limit the prospects for African Americans, and by extension, any American deemed unworthy. It's easy to view their actions separately, but this is intentional.

Educational and Economic Consequences

Educational funding and academic initiatives face elimination, causing African American scholars with fewer chances to pursue a quality education. These cuts also affect Indigenous learners and served as a predicate for attacks on Latino scholars. African American households continue to live in districts with underfunded schools due to historical patterns of segregation and inequality, and the concomitant effect of cutting programs unequally affects every disadvantaged youth and individuals with disabilities.

Support for Black-owned businesses and vital health initiatives has been reduced, causing the country lacking the information necessary to address systemic disparities within the economic system and medical infrastructure. The follow-on effect will weaken studies and funding for women of all ethnic backgrounds. By rewriting who matters, who is appreciated and which narratives are shared, these approaches intensify the obstacles that communities have fought for generations to overcome.

Erasure and Suppression in Tandem

Removal and censorship operate together, and those implementing them typically begin with the African American community. Those seeking to weaken democratic systems have removed African American narratives from curricula, displays and public memory, depriving us of the lessons of confrontation, correction and restoration. Rising autocracies understand how to influence schools, universities, businesses and government institutions toward quiet compliance.

Moving Ahead and Shared Duty

The challenge before us now is: how will we respond in response? Should we permit anxiety, misinformation and autocracy to determine the future? Or should we take action, fiercely and deliberately, to defend the truth, respect African American advancements and safeguard access to chances for all citizens? The answer will shape not just this moment, but the very future of the nation.

Protecting and defending the historic progress we've made represents an ethical necessity, one that demands concerted civil action. As the struggle for liberation has demonstrated, when we fight for liberty, we succeed. We certainly confront organized assaults against reality, which are intended to create hopelessness or cause paralysis – but we cannot allow that.

The country's tomorrow will not arrive automatically. Its success or failure will be determined by what we choose to act and oppose today.

The national narrative began by deciding that from many, we could become one. E pluribus unum represents the core of diversity, equity and inclusion, the actual experience for African Americans and the evidence that we can build something greater than fear and despair. Collectively, we can preserve access, respect reality and strengthen our democracy for future eras.
