The White House disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

Although Vought provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that staff reductions would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a union for federal workers confirmed that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to the public across the country,” said a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s effect on government workers.

This is unjust to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate said. “Our air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and safety officials are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

The irony is that lawmakers and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries during the funding gap.
